MSCL

MSCL module front panel: a narrow 4HP black Eurorack panel with a large COMP knob at the top beside a status LED, a pair of LIMIT and THLD slide switches, ATTACK, RELEASE and GAIN knobs down the center, an SC/IN/OUT toggle switch, and five jacks labeled SC IN, IN L, OUT L, IN R and OUT R.

Compact Stereo Analog Compressor

1Introduction

Put some muscle into your mix! MSCL is a stereo compressor in 4 HP designed for your master bus to help “glue” your mix together. Inspired by the DBX “Over Easy” style compressor, it features independent attack and release knobs, output gain, and an all-in-one knob function for compression which decreases threshold, increases gain and ratio all with one turn.

2Front Panel Overview

Front panel diagram of MSCL from top to bottom: a status LED beside the large COMP knob, two slide switches labeled LIMIT and THLD flanking a small adjustment between them, an ATTACK knob, a RELEASE knob, a GAIN knob, a three-position SC/IN/OUT toggle switch beside the SC IN jack, and two columns of jacks below labeled IN L and OUT L, then IN R and OUT R.
MSCL front panel controls and jacks.
  1. COMP: Adjusts makeup gain, ratio, and threshold simultaneously. 1.25:1 to infinite:1 ratio.
  2. LIMIT: The limit switch limits the makeup gain on the COMP knob as the switch moves to the right. This makes the compressor act more like a peak limiter.
  3. THRESHOLD: The threshold switch lets you compress modular level signals as well as lower level sources.
  4. ATTACK: Controls how fast the compressor will react to incoming transients. 0.15ms/dB to 0.1s/dB.
  5. RELEASE: Controls the speed at which the compressor will release. 0.6ms/dB to 4s/dB.
  6. GAIN: Post-compression makeup gain. +/-35dB on the output.
  7. LED: Red indicates reduction and green indicates gain.
  8. SC/IN/OUT: Selects between sidechain, standard operation, and bypass respectively.
  9. SC IN: AC coupled sidechain audio input for controlling the envelope in SC mode.
  10. STEREO IN / OUT PAIR: AC coupled signal pass, DC coupled bypass.

3Detector Response

A slide switch on the rear of the module selects between RMS and Adaptive detector response, changing how the compressor measures the level of the incoming signal.
